The Refuge de La Boire is a traditional mountain pasture chalet located 1900 m up in the Oisans mountains in the Alps. The site offers outstanding views, unspoiled natural surroundings, hikes starting from the chalet and complete tranquility (the only chalet in the valley!).
The chalet sleeps six and comprises a large kitchen/lounge/dining room that sleeps three, a bedroom that sleeps a further three, a ground floor with bathroom and dry toilet and a south facing terrace. The ground floor is accessed down a ladder (steep) or from the outside.
Some games and books are available (books on the mountains, crime novels, etc.). Most cellphones (depending on your operator) pick up a signal outside, but as the chalet is far from the relay points, it is perfect for the electro-sensitive.
Please remember to bring your own sheets (2 x 70 cm beds, 1 x 140 cm and 1 x 160 cm) and towels.
As the chalet is isolated and off the grid, no fossil energies are used. 12 volt electricity is supplied by solar panels (to be used sparingly – a 220-volt inverter is provided to charge cellphones, etc.) and availability of hot water depends on the sunshine! Your hotpot will bubble contentedly on the wood-burning cooker, or you can of course use the gas cooker!. The spring water has not been analysed, so although you can safely use it to wash yourselves and the dishes, you are advised to bring bottled water for drinking.
How to get to the chalet
You can reach the chalet on foot or by car up an 8 km track from the village of Besse (5 km unpaved). The track can be slippery in bad weather and if you do decide to drive there, it is under your own responsibility. In winter time, access is solely for snowshoers or ski mountaineers and is only suitable for people fully kitted out and used to navigating in the mountains in winter conditions (no signposted tracks). You can also contact a guide or trek leader to accompany you – I myself am qualified and regularly provide supervision as a trek leader.
